Dog Food Buying: What To Look For

Dog Food Buying What To Look ForBeing a dog owner is one of the best simple joys we can experience in our lives. Our dogs provide us with unconditional love and affection, and, in some cases, even protection. We want to give them nothing but the best when we put their food down for the day to ensure that they are both happy and healthy. Unfortunately what it says on the front of the dog food label isn’t nearly as important as what it says on the back. When it comes to buying food for our dogs, many of us might not know where to start. Here is a small example of what to look for on dog food labels the next time you go shopping.

The best place to start when looking at the food label for your dog is with the name of the product. There are feed agency rules for pets and livestock that dictate that only certain percentages of ingredients in a product will allow them to have a certain label. For example Chicken For Dogs must contain over 90% chicken, whereas Chicken Flavored Dog food means that there could be little or no actual chicken animal protein in the food. Knowing the difference in the labels can mean the difference between a world class meal for your dog and some brown bits with a chicken smell sprinkled on them.

Other important aspects of the food labeling for your pets are of course the ingredient listings. As a rule the main ingredient that takes up the largest ratio of the food mixture will always appear first, followed by the subsequent ones in order of their contribution to the mix. This is a crucial part of the label to read very carefully especially if your pet has allergies to things such as beef or wheat. You can also use the food label to ensure that the content is age appropriate. You don’t want to feed your older dog a softer high calorie puppy food and vice versa.

Our dogs are like members of our family in some cases and to many owners it is very important to treat them like one. When it comes time to refill your dog’s supply of food be sure to take the time to read the ingredients and other labels to make sure you are getting the best nutrition for them. When our pets are as important in our lives as nearly everything else, we want to give them nothing but the best to provide them continued health for years to come.
